Lufthansa wrapped up their two week road trip in Los Angeles last Tuesday, October 21. The team left New York on October 7 in a custom-made food truck for a journey across North America to promote their ‘Taste of America’ menus. The goal was to offer a first-class in-flight dining experience on the sidewalks of six major cities.

Complimentary meals were offered to the first 200 visitors at each site and the response was enthusiastic as office-workers flocked to the airplane-inspired truck to see what it was all about. Crowds were fascinated as chefs ‘on-board’ explained how the menu was specially designed for taste buds at altitude. Many were surprised to learn the changes between taste buds in-flight versus on the ground.

The truck travelled from New York City to Charlotte, Miami, Atlanta, Dallas and finally Los Angeles showcasing the cultre-inspired ‘Taste of America’ menus designed to represent the cities Lufthansa services.  Meals such as short ribs, chicken & waffles, peach cobbler, New England seafood, gumbo, steak and chocolaty desserts demonstrated local, loved tastes and flavors.

Quality was a focus as chefs demonstrated, as the food cart craze does, that meals, expertly made, in transit can be delicious.  White tablecloths, red roses and music created a true dining experience allowing future passengers to test Lufthansa catering out on the ground before they took to the air. Rain or shine, the show went on and the meals were served in style.

Wikipedia tells us food carts first popped up in North America in the late 1800s and were known as Chuck Wagons. In recent years the trend has exploded in cities across North America as the fad becomes a popular lunchtime or late-night dining option. Cuisine has evolved from tacos and hot dogs to gourmet ethnic flavors and specialty dishes.
