Brad Corino

Gourmet Foods Scholarship

My name is Brad Corino. My parents raised me in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania—a suburb of Philadelphia. I have a loving family and a supportive group of friends. Born in 1998, life has treated me very well for over 21 years. My senior year at Loyola Maryland begins this fall. I study marketing. But I’d like to become a dentist. I love the applications of marketing to patient comfort and compliance—without these, a dentist has no hope of providing effective treatment. In addition to my marketing courses, I’ve taken a battery of science courses in order to prepare for dental school. Outside of school, I love to run. I plan to run my second marathon this November. I like to think I have big dreams. In 30 years, I’d like to have my own dental practice, a nice family, and no health problems. But really, I’ll just want some hair on my head.

Zina Darwash

United Airlines Scholarship

My name is Zina Darwash and I am currently a graduate student at the Lebanese American University in International Affairs and Public Policy with a focus on Middle Eastern studies. I acquired my undergraduate degree in Political Science and International Law from the American University of Beirut and prior to that, I graduated from King’s Academy. Before pursuing my undergraduate degree, I studied at the University of Oxford for a month and a half, where I took a course in the history of Europe and the world. I participated in various extra-curricular activities. I was the director of the crisis committee in my school’s MUN club and taught English to underprivileged children from the Zaatari refugee camp. As part of my own initiative, I write scholarly articles for my own blog that touch upon politics, social issues and environmentalism, the latest being an article titled Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and Gamal Abdel Nasser: Same, Same, but Different. The article explores the foundational framework with which both dictators built their republics, solidified their rule and maintained a tight noose on political, economic and social life in their respective states. For my internships, I worked as a political analyst at the Royal Hashemite Court of Jordan. I interned as a desk and occasionally a field reporter at the Daily Star, Lebanon’s leading English newspaper. In the summer of 2018, I was hired as a research consultant and liaison between city councils and municipalities at Global Partners Governance GPG, a British political consultancy. I have also performed several post-legislative scrutinies on Jordanian laws with GPG and recommended pointers on amendment, most notably, the investment law. On a larger scale, I prepared a bid from scratch for GPG to carry out a political reform project in Lebanon with regards to increasing female political participation in parliament that was submitted to the British Government for funding. In 2014, I was picked by the Royal Hashemite Court of Jordan to travel with His Majesty King Abdullah II to attend congress where we asked for aid to support Jordan during the Syrian refugee crisis.

Giovanna Villarreal

Air Fayre Scholarship

Thank you for allowing me to be the recipient of the 2019 Air Fayre Scholarship! I am very grateful and excited to be able to comfortably continue my education at the University of California Irvine with this help. My name is Giovanna Amor Villarreal and I was born and raised in Los Angeles County. Growing up in a largely populated area has shown me many different lifestyles, but from it all, I have always appreciated the culture and dedication of the working class I was born into. I have valued the great lengths my parents went through to give my brother and me a chance in life ever since they came here from their home countries. Attending schools that were largely made up of minority students like me opened me to the fact that they didn’t provide much assistance in helping students continue their educations at four-year universities. This was a setback for me, as I knew I had to continue my education, continue learning in order to live a better life. I was and will continue to be dedicated to learning so that someday I can share my experiences with others. Since I was young, I have understood the importance of education, and how lucky I am to be attending a four-year university straight out of high school. Double majoring in Criminology, Law & Society and Urban Studies is an important part of my life, as I have been exposed to the realities of America's criminal justice system. In the future, I hope to help others who have become part of a terrible cycle in the criminal justice system due to lack of education, money and power.
