IFSA Foundation Scholarship Success Story

Douglas Karugonjo, an IFSA Foundation scholarship recipient, recently completed his Masters in Quality Management at the University of Wollongong in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

Douglas received the Harvey and Laura Alpert Scholarship in 2018 and the gategroup Scholarship in 2017. Douglas graciously thanked his scholarship donors and the IFSA Foundation Board for their support.

Thanks to your support and that of the members of IFSA, I have completed my Masters in Quality Management at the University of Wollongong, which I embarked on in 2017 and completed in 2019. I attained an overall 70% Weighted Average Mark, equivalent to an overall 3.5 GPA. I want to take this opportunity to thank you, the organization and the members, sincerely for bringing me to this point.

- Douglas Karugonjo

Success stories like Douglas’ are only made possible by the generosity of IFSA members in funding scholarships. In 2019, the IFSA Foundation reached the $1 million milestone for scholarships awarded and its mission of supporting deserving students continues.

IFSA Award Spotlight

American Airlines was awarded the 2020 IFSA Award for Best Inflight Food or Beverage as a result of its partnership with Zöes Kitchen. This award recognizes a food or beverage product that appeals to passengers' taste and enhances the onboard experience based on appearance, function, innovation, quality and taste.

The partnership was designed "to introduce all-new menu items for customers that offer delicious, light and fresh choices onboard Domestic Main Cabin and First Class." Menu items included signature dishes direct from Zoës Kitchen restaurants, as well as some offerings uniquely available to American Airlines' passengers.

“We are excited to elevate the inflight dining experience and deliver an enhanced Main Cabin experience to millions of customers by offering these menu items,” said Raphael Girardoni, Managing Director of Food and Beverage for American Airlines. “In the air, our goal is to provide delicious food inspired by an elevated simplicity. The Zoës partnership offers just that.”

Congratulations, American Airlines!

Government Affairs & Education Committee Update

IFSA's Government Affairs and Education Committee (GAEC) monitors global regulatory and legislative issues impacting the industry. These are the latest updates:

  • IFSA Registers to Attend FDA Meeting on Food Safety: IFSA will participate in the 21 October Public Meeting hosted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about a modern approach, called “A New Era of Smarter Food Safety,” that seeks to strengthen FDA’s protection of the U.S. food supply by creating a more digital, traceable system. Following the meeting, IFSA will provide a report of outcomes and will submit comments based on member input.
  • IFSA Engages with European Commission on Single-Use Plastics Issue: IFSA is working to address the Single-Use Plastics (SUP) Directive in the EU, which will ban products for which alternatives exist on the market, such as single-use plastic cutlery, plates and items made of oxo-degradable plastics by the year 2021. Earlier this month, GAEC finalized and shared with the European Commission (EC) IFSA's position on the issue. In addition, on 4 October, IFSA submitted responses to the EC’s Phase 1 Survey regarding SUP definitions and accepted an invitation to attend a stakeholder workshop in Brussels on 18 October.
