Dear IFSA members,

On behalf of the IFSA Board of Directors, it is my distinct pleasure to wish you a Happy New Year! I would also like to share with you a few of the strategic initiatives IFSA will tackle in 2013.

Last year, IFSA and the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX) formed a working group to review and evaluate current joint initiatives and identify potential opportunities for partnership that would lead the groups to further alignment. This group is comprised of individuals that represent the various membership segments in both IFSA and APEX.

One of the first areas the group examined for additional collaborative opportunities is the Annual Conference & Exhibition, and IFSA’s co-location with the APEX Expo. This year will mark the fourth consecutive year for the co-located event. Additionally as the Associations continue to align, IFSA will provide monthly updates from the onboard services industry in APEX’s official publication, Airline Passenger Experience. We will have more updates to share about these synergies soon.  

Please make plans to join IFSA in Anaheim, California from September 9-11 for the 2013 IFSA Annual Conference & Exhibition. The Conference schedule includes an exciting line-up of speakers, networking events and the exhibition tradeshow offering numerous opportunities to meet with representatives from more than 60 airlines from across the world.

Also, IFSA will travel to Hamburg, Germany to participate in the 2013 World Travel Catering & Onboard Services Expo from April 9-11. Expo attendees will discover more about the IFSA membership benefits available to them, how to leverage IFSA as an industry resource and learn more about the Association’s strategic initiatives.

I encourage you to explore the many ways you can become involved in the Association. You may wish to participate on a working committee, sponsor or exhibit during our annual tradeshow, or simply advertise your products and services to the IFSA membership via the website or in OnBoard IFSA, our monthly e-newsletter to members.

Look for additional updates on the upcoming events and strategic initiatives in OnBoard IFSA, on the IFSA website and IFSA’s social media channels. Thank you for your continued support of IFSA.

Booth Selection for 2013 IFSA Exhibition Scheduled to Begin in February

Online booth selection will begin in February. All prior exhibitors will be assigned a date and time at which they may access the online booth reservation system. As a reminder, 2013 Membership Dues are due in full before you may select exhibit space for the 2013 Exhibition. The order of selection is based on the IFSA point system.

Points are earned in three areas:

·         Membership-The number of years your company has been an IFSA member.
·         Exhibition-The number of booths your company has purchased at previous IFSA conferences.
·         Sponsorship-Your company’s level of participation as a sponsor at previous IFSA conferences.

IFSA Headquarters will be sending a separate communication to the main exhibit contact at your company which will include your selection date and time, as well as a copy of the IFSA tradeshow floorplan. As in previous years, the booth selection will be administered through an online portal and your booth selection will take place real time over the internet. Specific instructions will be included in the upcoming communication.

2013 Membership Renewal Notices

By now, you should have received the 2013 Membership Dues Renewal notices from IFSA Headquarters. The invoices were distributed to the primary and alternate contacts listed for each member company via email.

In 2013, IFSA members can continue to look forward to: 

·         IFSA Annual Conference and Exhibition to take place September 9-11 at the Anaheim Convention Center, once again co-located with APEX
·         Onboard IFSA, our monthly electronic newsletter, will continue to keep you abreast of industry and Association news delivered directly to your desktop
·         Online access to the World Food Safety Guidelines, an authoritative, widely recognized and comprehensive set of standards and benchmarks to assist the industry in developing robust food safety management systems against which responsible, meaningful and objective auditing may be conducted worldwide
·         Access to the interactive IFSA Membership Directory, available on the IFSA Web site (
Don’t forget about IFSA’s Early Bird Renewal special! Renew your membership dues by January 31, 2013 and avoid a 15% late fee.

Exhibitors: 2013 IFSA Membership Dues are due in full before you reserve booth space at the 2013 IFSA Annual Conference & Exhibition.

IFSA Food Safety Consultant Dean Davidson represents the onboard services industry and provides updates when governmental regulations are formed or modified.This month Mr. Davidson reports the following:
The Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) contains many instructions to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that require changes to its oversight and regulation of the food industry, including 50 different deliverables in the form of new regulations, guidance and reports to Congress.  After an initial burst of activity at FDA the entire process slowed to a crawl in 2012 as the deadlines for major rules on preventive controls, importer verification and produce safety passed while the proposed rules were in the review process.  For further information about the FSMA, visit
Facility registration due by Jan. 31, Prior registration no longer valid

Facilities that are required to register with FDA have to renew their registrations every other year between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31 of each even-numbered year, according to Section 415(a)3 of the USDA’s Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C). Because there was a delay in FDA’s implementation of registration for the 2012 cycle, registration renewal did not become available until Oct. 22, 2012. FDA will exercise enforcement discretion with respect to registration renewals submitted to FDA between Dec. 31, 2012 and Jan. 31, 2013. 
While FDA will exercise enforcement discretion, all catering establishments and their suppliers should electronically submit their renewal immediately.  Due to the expansion of information requirements, the old registration is no longer valid.

The proposed rules for Preventive Controls for Human Food and Standards for Produce Safety published in the Federal Register on January 4, 2013.
